Lot Description
CURTIS, Edward, photographer. Old Grass House - Wichita. Signed proof print with finished photogravure.
8 x 6 in. proof print of a grass-thatched hut with pointed roof, set amongst a copse of trees, affixed to 10 x 8 in. original storage envelope with inked notations (toning, soiling, edge and corner wear to print and envelope, unexamined outside frame). The scene is identified in the lower margin as "Old Grass-House - Wichita," and blue inked notations in left margin include, "4195 / Sept. 17 1927" and "North American Indian Vol. XIX." The lower margin of the print is inscribed in red ink in Edward Curtis' hand, "From Copyright Photograph by E.S. Curtis." Below this, Curtis has made corrections to the title in red ink, indicating that "Grass House" should be a "compound word, Hyphen." He has also crossed out the capital "H" in "House," and has written below this, "Lower case make h." Finally, Curtis notes that he wants a "dash" between "House" and "Wichita."
[With:] Old Grass-House - Wichita. Volume photogravure, image approx. 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 in., sheet 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. (visible) (unexamined outside frame). Copyrighted by E.S. Curtis, 1907. The photogravure is matted and framed together with the annotated print of the same "Old Grass-House - Wichita," 15 x 21 in. overall.
