Lot Description
A Louis XVI Style Gilt Bronze Mounted Parquetry Cabinet-on-Stand
Attributed to François Linke, Late 19th Century
Height 73 x width 49 x depth 18 inches.
This lot is located in Chicago.
Property from the Estate of Barbara D. Greenwood, Chicago, Illinois

Note:
At least three bronze mount patterns incorporated on this cabinet are mounts which appear on other examples of furniture produced by Francois Linke. These include the frieze surmounting the middle cabinet door which depicts a central female mask framed by two cornucopia, flanked by two rams and with trailing acanthus and scrollwork [1]; the two adjacent friezes surmounting the right and left cabinet doors which depict a vertical alternating flora and geometric pattern [2]; and the flower basket suspended from ribbon located in the center of the lower cabinet section [3]. While these mounts are unmarked, their details and proportions are typical of examples stamped for Linke.

[1] See example in Christopher Payne, François Linke1855-1946, The Belle Epoque of French Furniture, Woodbridge, Antique Collectors' Club, 2003, p. 203, plate 220 (model no. 1104).

Condition Report
Appears in overall good, stable, attractive condition. Having a fairly even glossy finish throughout with some areas of heavier fading to superstructure of case. The baluster gallery on top with a slightly darker patina than the rest of the gilt-bronze mountings. A Few of the mountings are lifting slightly from the case, bronzes with tacks on underside to attach to case. The lock on the left door of superstructure replaced with an English-stamped example. Some scattered splitting, lifting and a few small areas of replaced veneer, largely does not detract from overall aesthetic of piece unless viewed very closely. One area of slightly larger loss to veneer on central door frame above escutcheon. The glass appears largely intact but likely later. A small flat flake to upper right corner of glass on left side of case, visible but does not appear to impact stability of pane. The interior of superstructure fitted for one shelf in each section, shelves not present. Larger bronze mountings and lock plates were removed to inspect for marks, none were noted and elements were reattached. Additional images available upon request.
