AUDUBON, John James (1785-1851) and John BACHMAN (1790-1874). The Quadrupeds of North America. New York: V.G. Audubon, 1849, 1851, 1854.
3 volumes, 8vo (253 x 172 mm). Half-titles, 155 hand-colored lithographed plates by W.E. Hitchcock and R. Trembly after original drawings by John James Audubon and John Wodehouse Audubon. (Some minor toning and spotting, slight soiling, staining and pencil marks.) Contemporary dark green morocco gilt, spines in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, gilt-lettered in 2 and gilt-ruled in all, edges gilt (a few joints starting, hinges reinforced, some wear). Provenance: sold Hindman Auctions, Sale 1097, Lot 542, 9 November 2022.
FIRST OCTAVO EDITION. The Quadrupeds was first published between 1845 and 1848 in three folio volumes with 150 colored plates; a supplement, published in 1854, provided an additional volume of text and 6 plates. This first octavo edition, issued in response to the success of the octavo edition of The Birds of America, contains all of the original 150 plates and 5 of the 6 supplemental plates, reduced by means of the camera lucida.
