Jefferson Davis (2). First, uncredited, attributed to Minnis & Cowell, Richmond, VA, ca 1863. Oval salt print on 2 3/8 x 3 3/4 in. mount (toning and some light soiling to print and mount). Provenance: Dr. John O'Brian Collection. Second (after lithograph/engraving), Richmond, VA: Vannerson, n.d. (toning, small blemish near top edge of print, mount appears to have been trimmed). -- Varina Howell Davis, wife to Jefferson Davis (after lithograph/engraving). New York: E. & H.T. Anthony, n.d. (toning, wear to top left edge of print, small pinholes near top margin). -- Joseph E. Johnston (after lithograph/engraving). Uncredited, n.d. (toning and some soiling to print and mount, print and mount trimmed). -- E. Kirby Smith (3, possibly after lithographs/engravings). First, Richmond, VA: Vannerson & Jones, ca 1865 (fading, some light soiling). 2-cent internal revenue stamp to verso. Second, New York: E. & H.T. Anthony, n.d. (minimal spotting). -- Raphael Semmes (possibly after lithograph/engraving). New York: E. & H.T. Anthony, ca 1865 (toning and some light soiling). -- Matthew Fontaine Maury. Richmond, VA: Anderson, ca 1869 (residue on mount verso). Period inked notation on verso identifying subject and noting that he was "posed by E.W." Modern description furnished by Carroll J. Delery indicates that the photo was posed by Edward V. Valentine, the famous sculptor. -- Composite CDV of CSA Generals Johnston, Price, Forrest, Gardner, Bragg, Smith, and Hood. New York: E. & H.T. Anthony, n.d. (few light creases, toning). -- Thomas L. Allen, 13th North Carolina, Co. B (as per penciled inscription to verso). Uncredited, n.d. (fading and some soiling to print, edges trimmed). No Thomas Allen is listed in HDS with the 13th North Carolina. -- Alice Churchill Robinson Valentine, wife to sculptor Edward V. Valentine, known for his busts and status of Confederate personalities (2). First, Richmond, VA: Anderson & Co., n.d., period identification to verso (light toning). Second, Richmond, VA: C.R. Rees & Co., n.d., period notation to verso (light toning, residue to mount verso). -- August Kiss, sculptor and mentor to Edward V. Valentine. Berlin: Gebr. Radtke, n.d., period identification to verso. -- Joh. Ritten von Alpenburg, standing portrait of gentleman inscribed to Edward Valentine. Innsbruck: M. Endres, n.d. -- Standing portrait of an unidentified gent. Uncredited, n.d. Inscribed on verso "Yours Truly, R.S."
Together, 25 CDVs. Condition generally good. Many with even toning, some with spotting and soiling, corner/edge wear to mounts.
