Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. War-date letter with hand-drawn map outlining the plan for crossing the river near Ellis's Ford from Lieutenant Robert B. Hathaway, 102nd New York Regiment. 4 August 1863.
One page, folio, 7 3/4 x 10 in. Creased at folds, some discoloration spots and soiling to creases, tear to upper edge of last leaf.
In this letter to Major Gilbert M. Elliott, Lieutenant Hathaway includes what he describes as a "sketch of River from Ellis Ford to Extent Picketed by left [indecipherable] of 102 Regt." He explains, "on Examination I think the only place possible to cross is Eather [sic] at the Dam or below to Ellis mill when by the aid of Rocks small parties could cross. Above the Dam the water is deep and banks on Each side steep..."
The sketch presented at the top of the page depicts a river with scattered houses on either side. Labels and descriptions are plentifully inscribed along the map, indicating types, depths, and other characteristics of geographic features, along with names of the owners of some houses. Mr. Ellis's house along with the eponymous mill and ford are labelled.
