Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR - CONFEDERATE]. Special Orders No. 17. Headquarters, Trans-Miss. District, Little Rock, Arkansas. 17 June 1862. [With:] Printed pass for Confederate soldier at Van Buren, Arkansas.

9 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. printed broadside issued at Fort Smith, Arkansas, by the Trans-Mississippi CSA army in regards to assignments, signed in type, "By Command of Maj.-Gen. Hindman. R.C. Newton, A.A. Gen." With "Official: J.P. Wilson, A.A. Gen'l." printed in lower margin (old folds and creases, some partial separation near folds, few small holes, scattered spotting, chipping and short tears to edges). RARE: Not located in Parish & Willingham.

Assignments include:

III. Major N.B. Pearce assigned to duty as Commissary, Acting Quartermaster, and Acting Ordnance officer at Fort Smith. All officers, agents and contractors in or for either of these departments, in the Indian Territory, and in the counties of Benton, Washington, Crawford, Sebastian, Franklin, Johnson, Pope, Newton, Madison, and Carroll, in the State of Arkansas, will report to him, without delay, and obey his instructions...

IV. Major Pearce is charged with the duty of making adequate provision, in each of the departments over which he is placed, for all Confederate troops which now are or may hereafter be within the limits specified in paragraph one (1) of this order...

V. Until otherwise ordered major Pearce will be Post Commandant at Fort Smith and Van Buren, - Martial Law is hereby declared over said cities and the country within five (5) miles of the same...

[With:] 7 x 3 in. partially printed pass issued to a Confederate soldier at Van Buren, AR, near Fort Smith (old fold, light edge wear). Signed by Sutton F. Cottrell, Provost Martial. Although identified to "S.M. Karnes," this was possibly issued to Samuel A. Karnes, who is listed as serving with Johnson's Arkansas Infantry, although this cannot be confirmed.
