[CIVIL WAR]. Folk art carved Civil War soldier's pipe identified to Lieutenant Colonel James Gwyn, 118th Pennsylvania Infantry. Ca 1862.
Circa 1862
Eagle carved laurel root pipe bowl depicting a spread wing eagle with shield, incised, "LIEUT COL. J. GWYN." Height 3 1/8 in.
James Gwyn (1828-1906) was an Irish-born immigrant who arrived at the Port of New York on 4 November 1846. Gwyn enlisted in the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on 21 April 1861.
In July 1862, Gwyn was elevated to Lieutenant Colonel of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was WIA at Wilderness, VA, 5 May 1864. By the time the war ended, Gwyn had been elevated to Brevet Major General having held command over the 3rd Brigade of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry.
