Lot Description
[ENSLAVEMENT & ABOLITION]. A group of documents, some related to enslaved individuals in Alabama and Tennessee.
Partly-printed bond document, listing 5 enslaved persons as collateral of the bounden: "a negro man by the name of Lawson about 35 years old Judy about 24 years old Catharine about 10 years old Mollie 8 years old Saly a girl 2 years old all dark complexion." Courtland, AL, 11 July 1859. One page, 7 7/8 x 12 1/2 in. (significant dampstaining, loss). -- Manuscript letter from outlining the division of an estate, including 13 enslaved individuals being 3 men, 4 women, and 6 children. The enslaved are to be divided among 4 distributees by a jury. Knoxville, TN, 18 September 1828. 3 pages, 6 x 8 in. (pages fully separated along vertical crease, plentiful creasing, separation, tearing, and discoloration throughout). Addressed on integral leaf. --
Manuscript bill for doctor's services over the course of several months, including multiple line items citing "Blisters," and various medicines. Alabama, 1842. One page, 7 1/2 x 8 3/8 in. (separations at creases, dampstaining, toning). Docketed and legally sworn before a Justice of the Peace as "reasonable & usual in the practice of medicine" on verso. Charges could be related to medical care for enslaved persons, but this is not confirmed. -- Manuscript promisory note including steerage passage for a woman from England. New York, 19 April 1833. One page, 7 1/4 x 3 3/4 in. (separated along creases with adhesive repair to verso, chipping, spotting throughout). Note does not appear to have anything to do with enslaved persons. -- Together, 4 documents, 2 of which reference enslaved individuals.
