Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. WARREN, George K., artist. Half plate daguerreotype of a well-dressed matron, from the personal studio collection of Warren. Lowell, MA, ca 1858-1864.

Half plate daguerreotype bust portrait of a matronly woman wearing glasses, a fur shawl, and an elaborately decorated bonnet. (Light tarnishing along edge, and  spotting to mat; re-glazed & resealed 1993.) Housed in a pressed paper case. Velvet pad stamped "Warren, 100 Merrimack St., Lowell." Provenance: Stated as being from the personal studio collection of George K. Warren. Acquired directly from the George K. Warren Estate, via Leicester Warren, Greensboro, NC.

George Kendall Warren (1824-1884) operated a daguerreotype studio at 128 Merrimack St. from around 1851 until around 1858, when he moved to 100 Merrimack St. His focus shifted to albums, as he worked as the photographer for Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. He opened a studio in Cambridge in 1863, and sold his Lowell studio to J.M. Washburn a year later.
