Lot Description
LAFAYETTE, Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de (1757-1834). Document signed ("Lafayette") with autograph postscript. Paris, 17 August 1832.

1 page, 7 1/4 x 8 3/4 in., bifolium, old folds, small clip stain on recto, residue and seal hole in address leaf, some edge wear. Written in English, the letter is addressed to French-born American scholar and jurist Peter Du Ponceau of Philadelphia, who served as President of the American Philosophical Society. Lafayette introduces a "most interesting traveller, Mr. Charles Nagy, of the Hungarian Academy. He visits the United States with the view to inform himself of the Institutions of the Country. He is a patriot of the first distinction and can give you every particular respecting his own country. I think I render a double service by making you acquainted." An autograph postscript is added at lower left, in which Lafayette adds in French that Mr. Nagy would be honored to visit the Philosophical Society. Integral address panel with red wax seal and note written in English by Lafayette, indicating that the letter goes "by Mr. Charles Nagy."
