Lot Description
[WESTERN AMERICANA]. HILLERS, John K. (1843-1925), photographer. A group of 104 Powell Expedition stereoviews, highlighted by a view of the photographer's camera.

6 x 4 in. stereoviews, mostly scenic expedition views, on trimmed cardstock mounts (overall good to very good condition, several with rich tonality, some with soiling; corner and edge wear to mounts, some with surface residue). Rectos feature "US Topographical and Geological Survey of the Colorado River of the West, By J.W. Powell and A.H. Thompson" imprint. Most versos with applied paper labels including the photographer's credit, image number, and title. Some labels also include the "Department of the Interior, US Geographical and Geological Survey of the Territories" imprint and 1875 date. Several versos also include applied paper label from publisher J.F. Jarvis, Washington, DC.

The collection is highlighted by No. 21.  Mouth of the Narrows. Credited to John K. Hillers, the view shows the Rio Virgen, with a large view camera on a tripod, with various plate boxes on the ground, on the opposite side of the river.
