Lot Description
[WESTERN AMERICANA]. JACKSON, William Henry (1843-1942), photographer. A group of 2 albumen photographs of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Ca 1870s.
13 x 10 in. albumen photographs on 20 x 16 in. gray cardstock mounts (toning, scattered spotting, mounts with minor chipping, some soiling, and residue near lower right corner). Each photograph is titled in the negative. Titles include: Columnar Basalts on Yellowstone River. Ca 1871. -- Crater of Lone Star Geyser. Arnold Hague on summit of cone. 1878. Hague (1840-1917) was an American geologist involved in many geological surveys in the United States and abroad. He became a member of the US Geological Survey in 1879 when it was first organized. He was later made geologist of the Yellowstone Park division in 1883, and assigned to the study of the geysers of that district in connection with the extinct volcanic regions of the Rocky Mountains.
Both photographs were taken by William Henry Jackson, who served as official photographer for the US Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, under the direction of F.V. Hayden.
