Lot Description
[MILITARIA - EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Sixth plate daguerreotype of a militiaman wearing a shako with eagle and pompon. Ca 1850s.
Seated studio portrait of a pre-Civil War militiaman wearing his uniform including 1851 pattern shako with pompon and eagle insignia. (Significant spotting/oxidation to plate and mat, other plate imperfections including small scratches; unsealed. Housed in a leatherette case with maker's imprint to interior behind image: "Made By William Shew, Corner of Court & Howard Sts, Boston" (surface wear throughout, some separation to back cover). The subject rests one arm on the table next to him, which is draped in floral fabric, which appears to match the curtain with tassel hanging to the left side of the image.
