Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. MOON, Carl (1879-1948). A group of 4 photographs of male and female Native American subjects.
3 photographs of male Native American subjects, 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 in. (sight), each mounted in cardstock mat with gilt blindstamp in lower margin, "Carl Moon, 565 N. Mentor Ave., Pasadena, Cal." (prints in good to very good condition; some corner and edge wear to mounts, including light staining and surface loss). Each print is ink inscribed in lower margin, "Carl Moon," "Karl Moon," or "C.M." and one of the photographs includes Carl Moon's blindstamp at lower right. One of the subjects is identified on typed paper label accompanying print as "'Juan Pecheko,' 1903 (One eyed Man of San Felipi Village" (slight puncture to mount verso that does not appear to impact print). -- 8 x 10 in. photograph of a young Laguna Pueblo woman standing a studio, holding a large vessel. No studio imprint (light wear to edges). -- Together, 4 photographs.
Carl Moon (1879-1948) became interested in photography and Native Americans at an early age. After apprenticing for six years, he opened his own photographic studio in Albuquerque. He was in charge of Fred Harvey’s Headquarters at the Grand Canyon, AZ, and also worked as the official photographer for the Santa Fe Railroad. His highly artistic and sensitive images were exhibited in major museums around the US, and at the invitation of President Theodore Roosevelt, at the White House.
