Buffalo Bill's Wild West. Hartford, CT: The Calhoun Printing Company, 1884. 8vo, chromolithographed paper wraps, 16 pages (some edge wear, occasional staining, contents toned, otherwise very good). It is plentifully illustrated with scenes featuring Cody, Frank North, and expert shotgun shooter, A.H. Bogardus.
[With:] 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. printed insert that was originally placed in the larger Buffalo Bill's Wild West program for 1884 described above (insert in very fine condition). The obverse features a lithographed portrait of Buffalo Bill; reverse features the full program for the show with events including the grand parade, grand equestrian entree, a Pony Express exhibition, shooting demonstrations by Captain Bogardus and his 4 sons, a stage coach attacked by Native Americans, a buffalo chase by Cody and Pawnee Indians, and a Native American attack on a settler's cabin with a rescue by Cody and his men. Also known as "tip ins," the inserts were often used by the Wild West. The show sometimes charged a few pennies for the insert and 10-20 cents for a full program.
