Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Quarter plate tintype portrait attributed as David Kiplinger, Co. K, 102nd Ohio Infantry Regiment, accompanied by ladder badge, CDV, and RPPC.
Standing portrait of a young, scruffily-bearded private in full kit including cartridge box and belt rig featuring bayonet scabbard, oval "US" belt plate, and cap pouch. Standing at approximately 5 feet 11 inches, the subject nearly dwarfs his Austrian Lorenz rifle musket with quadrangle bayonet, which stands fully upright. (Minor spots, scratches and surface imperfections, great clarity; unsealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case (some parts missing, significant wear throughout). Attached to velvet pad is a 3-bar ladder badge with infantry marked drop, all together reading "Co. K. / 102 / Ohio / Vol. Inf." The regimental numbers are separate metal pieces attached to the second bar. -- CDV portrait of who is presumed to be David Kiplinger, a bit older, with his wife.  (Male subject's beard has been marked over with what appears to be pencil, toning and some notable discoloration to lower left, wear to edges and corners; verso with significant wear, surface loss, and various types of residue including adhesive and colorful.) Verso photographer's imprint partly lost to surface abrasion, though "Ashland, Ohio" remains visible. -- Real photo postcard featuring the members of a GAR post. (Toning, discoloration, and wear to edges and corners.) Recto bears ink inscription "G.A.R. Post." -- Together, a group of 4 items attributed to David Kiplinger, Co. K, 102nd Ohio Infantry Regiment.

David Kiplinger enlisted as a private on 22 August 1862, at the age of 19, and mustered into Company K of the 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment on 6 September. He mustered out on 20 June 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. In later applications for disability pension, it records that his previous occupation was as a farmer, and that he has become totally disabled from subsisting by manual labor. His residence since leaving the service is listed as Ashland Co., Ohio until 1883. Kiplinger was married twice, first to Mary C. Cole, who passed away in 1877, and thereafter to Mary E. Wallet.

Lot includes photocopied records for David Kiplinger obtained from the National Archives.
