"Head Quarters of the Army," Washington, 30 July 1861. 1p, 8 x 9 3/4 in. Written just three months into the war and months before Scott retired from the service, Scott issues a safeguard to "Mrs. Mary Throckmorton." Accompanied by a CDV featuring a 3/4 length seated portrait of Scott in uniform below which is laid a clipped signature with rank ("Winfield Scott, Lieut Genl."). Backstamp of E. & H.T. Anthony of New York.
