Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Autographs and images of Union commanders, including:

SCOTT, Winfield (1786-1866). Letter signed ("Winfield Scott") as General-in-Chief of the Army, and countersigned by Asst. Adjutant General Edward D. TOWNSHEND. "Head Quarters of the Army," Washington, 30 July 1861. 1p, 8 x 9 3/4 in. Written just three months into the war and months before Scott retired from the service, Scott issues a safeguard to "Mrs. Mary Throckmorton." Accompanied by a CDV featuring a 3/4 length seated portrait of Scott in uniform below which is laid a clipped signature with rank ("Winfield Scott, Lieut Genl."). Backstamp of E. & H.T. Anthony of New York.

HOWARD, Oliver Otis (1830-1909). Letter signed ("O.O. Howard"), [New York], 10 September 1894, and CDV published by E. & H.T. Anthony, New York. 

SHERIDAN, Philip H. (1831-1888). Letter signed ("P.H. Sheridan"), Washington D.C., 2 November 1883, and CDV of Sheridan in uniform published by Golden & Sammons, Chicago.

BURNSIDE, Ambrose E. (1824-1881). Clipped signature ("A.E. Burnside") and CDV of Burnside in uniform with no backmark. 

McCLERNAND, John A. (1812-1900). Clipped signature ("John A. McClernand, Springfield, Ill.") and CDV of McClernand in uniform with backmark of Babb & Co., New York.

[With:] FARRAGUT, David G. (1801-1870). CDV of "Vice Admiral D.G. Farragut" in uniform, no backmark. -- MARSHALL, Humphrey (1812-1872). CDV of "Gen. Humphrey Marshall" in uniform, no backmark. -- BLACK, John Charles (1839-1915). Cabinet card of Black, ca early 1900s. Black was a Union commander and a Medal of Honor recipient. for gallantry at the Battle of Prairie Grove.

Conditions vary, most items in generally good condition with expected toning and wear given age, some with scattered soil, spotting, creases, trimming and cropping.
