Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR-NEW YORK]. A group of letters and documents relating to New York regiments, comprising: 
3 ALsS from Corporal John Seth Smith, Company K, 5th New York Cavalry, to his wife Martha. Includes Washington, 16 October 1862: on engraved Capitol letterhead with patriotic cover. Writes about the order for "boots and saddles" that was given last night, preparing horses. -- 2 December 1862: writes that Captain Cramer came last night and announced pay, asks Martha to write more often. --  [Chantilly, VA], 2 January 1863: on scrap of paper, writes about having "a great deal of work to do" and not sleeping, wishing Martha would write. -- ALS from Captain Charles F. Ingersoll, 1st New York Volunteers. Alexandria, VA, 8 September 1862 (fully separated along horizontal crease). Captain Ingersoll writes to his commander protesting his dismissal according to General Order 195, asserting he was posted to quarters by the surgeon in charge of the General Hospital in Alexandria. -- ALS from Richard Olgamon to Captain Martin T. McMahon of General McClellan's staff. 31 December 1861. Letter concerns the wife of Lieutenant Dempsey, 2nd New York State Militia, who was wounded and captured at Bull Run and has been imprisoned since. "Mrs. Dempsey's efforts to accomplish her husbands release exhibit a degree of resolution and persistence which I wish to God all of us men could lay claim to...you will pardon me if I ask you to add to your many duties this new duty of helping this poor Lady as far as you can..." -- ALS from M.J. Davis, Surgeon in charge, Artillery, 1st Brigade, II Army Corps. 4 November 1864. The surgeon is sending Private Alonzo Smith, Battery G, 1st New York Artillery, to the hospital at City Point, VA. -- Partly printed official return for Company I, 56th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, January 1863. -- 5 documents related to the 1st New York Light Artillery including lists of stores and special orders. -- 2 documents related to the 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry Regiment including an inventory of effects for a deceased soldier. -- Together, 14 letters and documents related to New York regiments.  

[With:] 2 letters to William Dennison Whipple from possibly his wife, near Morristown, PA. Dated 14 and 30 October 1864. Both with postally used covers addressed to "Brig. Gen. Wm. D. Whipple" at Nashville, TN and at Headquarters, Army of the Cumberland in Chattanooga, TN respectively. 

[With:] 2 additional Civil War documents including a partly printed document signed by Lieutenant Colonel Richard Irwin, 1863.
