8vo, 144 pp., original blindstamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt (shelf wear, back cover fully separated from spine, loss to top edge of spine near title; contents good overall, with occasional spotting to edges). Inside cover identified to Sam'l Riggs of R., Rockville, Maryland. Riggs served as captain of Company R, Rockville Company, 1st Maryland Volunteers. 

"Best account, by a participant, of the 1858 campaign against the northwestern tribes" - Howes K172. Graff 2341; Sabin 37944; Smith 5519; Tweney 40.

[With:] CDV vignetted portrait of Lawrence Kip. New York: Brady, n.d. Imprint on recto and verso. Modern penciled biographical information on verso.

Kip was a cadet at the US Military Academy from 1853-1854, he was enlisted in the Civil War on 14 May 1861, and was commissioned the same day as a first lieutenant into US 3rd Light Artillery. He was promoted to major and commissioned into the US Volunteers Aide-De-Camp on 20 August 1862. He saw several other promotions throughout the war, eventually resigning on 1 November 1867.
