Lot Description
[INDIAN WARS]. 1878 request not to withdraw troops from Ft. Klamath, OR, incl. ref to Snake Indians.
CHADWICK, Stephen F. (1825–1895), Governor of Oregon. Letter signed "S.F. Chadwick," addressed to "Gentlemen." Salem, OR, 22 June 1878. 1 1/4 pages, 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 in., on "State of Oregon, Executive Office" letterhead, old folds, creasing to margins, tape repair to top right corner. Chadwick begins by discussing leasing a lot to the recipient for a warehouse. He goes on to present a "copy of a dispatch I sent to Sec of War today." The copy within the body of the letter is addressed to George W. McCrary, Secretary of War, Washington, DC. Chadwick writes, "I respectfully protest against the withdrawal of troops stationed at Klamath Reservation as a most dangerous step. It is reported to me that in consequence of is the Snake Indians are leaving the reservation." Initialed below, "S.F.C." This was written in the midst of the Bannock War, an armed conflict between the US military and Bannock and Paiute warriors in Idaho and northeastern Oregon, which lasted from June to August 1878. Snake Indians reportedly joined the Bannocks in fighting against the United States in June 1878.
