Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Large collection of artwork, landscapes, and personalities in Europe & beyond.

The lot is highlighted by approx. 80 large format photographs or prints of varying subjects, including portraits of individuals and groups, both formal and informal, views of cities, towns, landscapes, landmarks, ruins, artwork, and armor. The photographs range in size from 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. to 11 x 15 in., with the majority measuring approx. 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 in., each on cardstock mount. People and locations throughout Europe, Africa, and beyond are documented, including Italy, France, Scotland, Germany, Greece, and Algeria. 

Some photographs are credited in the negative or on the cardstock mount. Identified photographers include: Leroux, Alger.; Pirou, Paris; Garrigues; and Giovanni Crupi, Taormina.

Highlighted photographs include: Conference Sanitaire Internationale de Paris, 1894. Credited to Pirou, Paris, in lower margin. An outdoor portrait of a large group of men (toning to print; loss to mount). -- 3 large format photographs of Venice, including the Bridge of Sighs, Golden Stairway at Doges Palace, and the Piazzetta (each with penciled title in lower margin of mount). -- Street view of Arab merchants. -- Huntly Castle. -- Balmoral Castle. -- And many more.

[With:] 12 3/4 x 9 in. album containing approx. 75 photographs moutned recto/verso on album pages, ranging in size from 1 1/2 x 2 in. to 7 1/2 x 11 in. (covers in poor shape; toning, spotting, significant chipping to prints and album pages). Many photographs accompanied by manuscript identification on album page. The majority of the photographs were taken in England, and include cities, towns, castles, cathedrals, landmarks, and landscape views. Highlights include Canterbury Cathedral, Rochester Cathedral and Castle, Piccadilly Circus, Clare & King's Colleges, Cambridge, Houses of Parliament, the Strand, Westminster Abbey, George's Landing Stage at Liverpool, and the SS Britannic.. The album also contains 3 images of US locations, including New York Harbor, Broadway, New York, and the Capitol, Washington, DC. 

[Also with:] 3 large format photographs of sculpture and the Bryant vase by Tiffany are also included, each on cardstock mount with imprint of the Centennial Photographic Co., Philadelphia International Exhibition, 1876. -- Large format view of a lavish interior at the home of Mathew Baird, Philadelphia, with Gutekunst's imprint in lower margin. -- Group of 20+ etchings of European subjects from Schiller=Galerie, 1859 (toning, soiling, spotting, wear to margins).

Together, more than 150 photographs and prints, mostly taken in Europe and beyond. Condition varies from poor to good, with toning, spotting, edge and corner wear throughout.
