Lot Description
GRAU, Shirley Ann (1929-2020). Keepers of the House. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1964.
8vo. Original green cloth stamped in red and gold; publisher's pictorial dust jacket (spine panel slightly darkened, some chipping, small chip to rear panel).
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY GRAU: "With all good wishes from Shirley Ann Grau New Orleans March 30, 1965." Keepers of the House was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The novel, set in rural Alabama, covers seven generations of the Howland family, and deals with the changing values and norms in the South and the hypocrisy of racism. Because of her condemnation of racist rhetoric, Grau was attacked by the Ku Klux Klan.
