A Large Japanese Patinated Bronze Floor Vase

Meiji Period, Late 19th Century

the oviform body with stepped and flared neck, raised on similar foot, the exterior decorated in high relief showing a vulture chasing a pheasant amongst pine under scrolling clouds, between birds in flight and diaper bands.
Approximate height 61 7/8 inches (157.2 cm).

Property from the Historic Toledo Yacht Club, Toledo, Ohio

The Toledo Yacht Club is a historic institution founded in 1865 on an island in the Ottawa river as an outdoor retreat to which members would ferry into enjoy fishing, hunting, swimming, and sunbathing. The organization has survived multiple moves and renovations, including a disastrous fire in 1907, before settling in its current home--a magnificent three-story Venetian-style structure on the shores of Toledo, which was appointed with ornate furnishings such as the present lot.

Condition Report

The central section with a stable vertical fissure measuring about 2 inches. Bruise and associated crack to the rim and running parallel to the mouth (the latter about 7 inches in length). Scattered surface scratches and deposit throughout from handling.
