Indiana census records document the residence of a John H. Miller (1853-1924) in Miami County, Indiana as early as 1860. By 1880, Miller owned his own farm in Jefferson, a township of Mexico, and census records from 1910 list Miller as the owner of a stock farm there.

Born in France, Henry Dousa (1820-1892?) immigrated to the United States in the late 1860s and took up residence in Lafayette and New Castle, Indiana. The 1885 Lafayette City Directory listed Dousa's occupation as "Portrait and Scenic Artist." Little is known of how Dousa became a painter, but over the course of his career, he painted the livestock and farms of his surroundings in a distinctive naive style.
