View of Farm - Residence of John Augspurger of Trenton, In Madison Township, Butler County, Ohio, drawn by himself in 1890
pen and watercolor on paper
inscribed and dated, lower right
22 x 34 1/2 inches.

John Augspurger (1819-1898) was the eighth child of Christian (1782- 1848) and Catharina Augspurger (1784-1847), the leaders of a group of French Amish families who settled in Butler County in 1819. John was purportedly born on a boat on the Ohio River while his family was en route to their new settlement. The Amish community there became an important cultural stopping point for immigrant families moving further west to Illinois and Iowa. John inherited part of his father's farm, depicted here, including the main house, built circa 1846-53, and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
