Lot Description
ORTELIUS, Abraham (1527-1598). Americae sive Novi Orbis, Nova Descriptio. Antwerp, ca 1572.

Engraved map of the Americas with hand-coloring in wash and outline, visible area 15 3/4 x 20 3/4 inches (400 x 527 mm). Framed (unexamined out of frame). Decorative cartouche with galleons and ships.

FIRST EDITION, second state, correcting the name of the Azores to "Las Acores." Ortelius's map was reprinted several times, and this plate had a relatively short life, being published only between 1570 and 1575. The map was engraved y Frans Hogenberg, based largely on Gerard Mercator's multi-sheet world map of 1569. Burden 39.

The work is among the earliest descriptions of North America, with original color.
