Lot Description
A Pair of George III Giltwood Girandole Mirrors
Manner of Thomas Chippendale, Circa 1765
Height 43 x width 20 1/2 x depth 10 inches.
Property from a Private Collection, Winnetka, Illinois, sold to benefit the Susman and Asher Foundation

Provenance:
Stair & Company, London

Note:
This pair of girandole mirrors utilize design elements similar to those illustrated in Thomas Chippendale’s The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director. Each of the unusual cartouche-form mirrors is bordered by a deeply carved flower and leaf drop at both sides. This element appears to possibly be inspired by Chippendale's illustrations of "Designs for Clock Cases". The delicate scrolled candle branches of each example and dripping icicles (beneath the crest of the mirror and where the candle branches issue forth) are a skillful execution of components pictured in Chippendale’s designs for "Girandoles" and "Glass Frames". The mirrors appear as a confident and inventive reimagining of Chippendale’s most recognizable design elements.

See Thomas Chippendale, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director (New York: Dover Publications Inc. 1996), plates CLXVI, CLXVII, CLXXVII, and CLXXVIII.

Condition Report
Overall well-conserved, ready to place condition. A few negligible chips with exposed gesso and wood. Wax drips on the candle arms and faintly visible fractures, which might be mere age cracks and not repairs. Candle cups and drip pans are metal with a dirty, greenish patina. Mirror glass shows signs of age, especially at the bottom, but likely not original. The gilding refreshed. One example with a small area of loss to one of the "icicle" elements on top of frame. Additional images available upon request.
Depth: 10 inches.
