US Navy Model 1861 Dahlgren Bowie Knife Bayonet by Ames
American Civil War

12" heavy singled edged spear point blade, with a 2.5" false edge and 1.6" wide at the ricasso. Overall length 16.625" in overall length with a 4.6875" brass hilt with finger-grooved wooded grip insert. Obverse ricasso marked U.S.N. / D.R. / 1864 with the DR being the mark of US Navy inspector Daniel Reynolds and also with US Navy reinspection marks of an {ANCHOR} over GG, the mark of US Navy Commander and ordnance inspector Guert Gansevroot who was stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard from 1860-1862 and in 1865. Pommel cap also with Reynolds' script DR cartouche. Reverse ricasso marked with the AMES MFG Co / CHICOPEE / MASS maker's mark with the upper two lines arched and the "G" and "O" in the first line underlined. Grip secured by a screw in the mortise of the brass hilt. The knife bayonet is accompanied by its original leather scabbard with pinned brass mounts.

Condition Report

Very fine. Blade in fine condition with some old dull grease and some lightly freckled minor oxidation and some tiny areas of very fine pinpricking. Brass with a rich, uncleaned mustard patina. Wood grip with some scattered dings and dents. Markings remain clear and crisp throughout. Latch spring in place and functional. Scabbard with some surface wear and light crazing, showing some scattered finish loss. Mounts with a rich butterscotch patina, stitching at rear of scabbard fine and tight.
