Springfield Model 1877 Carbine
Indian Wars

.45-70. 22" barrel length. SN: 88135. Casehardened breechblock and tang with the remaining metal parts blued and mounting a flat wrist walnut stock with lengthened 10.5" comb. Single-shot trapdoor action rifle mounting a saddle bar and ring to the left stock. The lock is marked {Eagle} U.S/SPRINGFIELD without a date marking while the breechblock is struck U.S./MODEL/1873. Item features the low arch breechblock, smooth trigger, a three click action, and correct rear sight graduated to 1200 yards with C marked onto the sight base paired with a pinned front blade. The carbine features a two piece triggerguard, and  a stacking swivel on the single U marked barrel band. Buttplate tang is struck US. Barrel is marked V/P/{Eagle's Head}. The receiver consists of the narrow type that fits flush with the width of the barrel. Left wrist struck with the ESA/1877 cartouche of Erskine S. Allin, and the toe of the stock features a crisp Circle P marking. The rifle features a freefloating firing pin. The stock features a trapdoor for storing the three piece cleaning rod that is currently present.

Condition Report

Very Fine. Bore is Very Bright with crisp rifling throughout and some patina forming near the muzzle. The casehardened finish is strong and shows some slight mottling forming on the top and some light operating wear on the rear breech. The finish has worn down on the top of the firing pin housing. The tang finish is strong. The blued finish on the barrel is fading to brown patina at the forward end with some abrasions forming on the front receiver that are taking on a brown patina. The blued finish on the lock is very strong with some spots of thinning over the flats, and some scratching near the front edge. Buttplate finish has worn down on the upper and lower edges resulting in gray patina forming.
