Lot Description
Colt Model 1860 Second Model Richards Conversion with Holster

.44 Centerfire. 5.75" barrel length. SN: 194856. Blued finish with casehardened frame, brass triggerguard, and one piece walnut grip. Single-action loading gate revolver converted from percussion by Colt using the Richards and Mason patents. The left frame is struck with patent marks reading PAT. JULY. 25. 1871./PAT. JULY. 2. 1872. with the barrel marked -ADDRERSS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-. The serial numbers match to all principal parts but the wedge pin and grips are not numbered. Punch dot mark to rear cylinder opposite an S stamp along with a T to the rear barrel lug. There is a C stamp in the hammer recess, and the loading gate is struck with assembly number 438. Springless wedge pin and mounting an externally sprung loading gate. The hammer features a firing pin installed with two cross pins. Replaced front sight. Item features a Richards style ejector rod housing that is non numbered with rough manufacture suggesting it is a replacement installed some time after the conversion. Richards model revolvers were completed at the factory with eight inch barrels, indicating this one has been cut down since production. The revolver comes with a leather flap holster held together with flat tacks along one side and mounting a black painted fastening stud. The second Model Richards conversion combined the Richards pattern ejector rod housing installed in the loading lever channel but adopted the major mechanical components of the Mason pattern conversion, including the Mason conversion plate.

Condition Report

Good to Very Good. The bore is dark with patina throughout and some spots of oxidation. The external metal finish is dominated by a gray patina with mottled dark gray to brown patterns forming on the cylinder and barrel. There are some nicks along the edges of the frame. The barrel shows some light pitting scattered along the barrel and the cylinder. The brass triggerguard displays scattered mars and a light patina forming with rounded edges suggesting buffing at some point. The grips show handling wear, mars, and a raised granular texture forming along with some rounding and losses along the edges of the butt. The right grip fails to fit flush with the frame. The action times and indexes correctly with some wiggle to the lockup. The holster has some scars, scuffs, and light abrasions overall with patches of white residue forming on the flap and the tip.
