.38 Colt. 7.5" barrel length. SN: 21435. (Mfg. in Percussion Ca 1864) Nickel plated refinish with casehardened hammer, silver plated gripstraps, and one piece walnut grips. Single-action loading gate revolver converted from percussion. Serial numbers match on all parts except for the non-numbered wedge pin. The left frame shows the two-line patent mark -PAT. JULY. 25. 1871.-/-PAT. JULY. 2. 1872.-, with the top of the barrel marked -ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-. The cylinder displays the Orsby roll engraving along with the mark COLT'S PATENT No. 777 that is force matched beneath to 435. Hammer recess marked O, left triggerguard B with 36 CAL marking, R to rear of barrel lug, J to rear cylinder. Multiple screws replaced including the wedge pin screw, and lower grip screw. Item mounts the Richards-Mason pattern hammer with firing pin retained by two pins, and mounts the Mason pattern ejector rod with target pattern knob. The barrel features a plug within the ramrod port. Interior of the grips are numbered in pencil along the back of the core. The serial number suggests that this revolver was shipped back to Colt for conversion as it lies outside the range of conversions manufactured from old stocks by Colt.
Fine as Refinished. The bore is Frosty with some weakness to the rifling and some oxidation forming at the edges of the lands near the muzzle. The nickel finish has worn down on much of the barrel with the strongest nickel remaining on the rear barrel and along the frame. The hammer retains casehardening along its flanks. Gripstraps have some nickel finish remaining in the edges with tarnish over the extant silver. Grips have handling wear and mars with some rounding along the edges of the butt. The wedge pin port shows some scratches and mars from disassembly. Action times and indexes correctly.
