Contemporary Cheekstock Flintlock Rifle with Diana Motifs by John B. Derrick (American, b.1936)

.40 caliber. 31" two stage octagonal to round barrel length. SN: NSN. Bare metal finish. Full length Bastogne walnut cheekstock with carved floral rococo molding to grip and carved "fantastic beasts" to both sides of forearm. Flintlock rifle with two leaf neoclassical folding notch rear sight and silver blade front sight. Item features a cast brass ball rest, patchbox on right side, and double set triggers. Buttstock has a carved elk horn boar's head fitting being held up by a satyr and soldier. Side panel has an elk horn fitting showing a carved parade scene with hunters and animals, and patchbox cover has a carved elk horn panel of the Heidelberg Castle bell tower. Forearm shows carved elk horn fittings to both sides. Comb, upper tang, and bottom edge of stock have carved elk horn fittings with knotwork and traditional patterns. Forend cap has a carved elk horn fitting with a sea serpent. Buttplate is carved elk horn scene of Diana intertwined with scroll. Bottom edge of stock shows an elk horn fitting of Diana in a tower in front of triggerguard. Triggerguard is cast brass with grotesque motifs. Stock fittings are also cast brass grotesques. Included with item is a wood ramrod with ebony tip and carved elk horn spacer.
