Photograph of a group of Hampton University students. Hampton, VA: Cheyne's Studio, ca 1910. 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. silver gelatin photograph on 12 1/2 x 14 in. cardstock mount (light toning to print, edge and corner wear to mount). Twenty students, of which six are women, one of whom appears to be somewhat older than the others (possibly a teacher?) are depicted, posed in front of one of the buildings on the grounds of Hampton University. Studio imprint of Cheyne's Studio lower right on mount. Christopher Ethelbert Cheyne was born in Brampton, Canada, before emigrating to Cincinnati, OH, as a young man. While there, he studied photography, married, and eventually moved to Hampton, VA, in 1894. He operated a studio in Hampton for many decades. His subjects included local businesses and family portraits, as well as the graduating men and women of the Hampton Institute (now Hampton University). A large collection of his work is now held in the Hampton Public Library's collection.

The two men in the front row are shown shaking hands with each other, possibly to finalize some type of agreement. The women wear dresses and the men wear suits for the occasion.

Research indicates that Louis Fowler took a number of photographs of African American subjects while operating his studio. -- 7 x 5 1/2 in. photograph on cardstock mount (print and mount trimmed, scattered surface abrasions, corner and edge wear including loss and some creasing). An uncredited photograph of a group of beautiful young women who were members of the African American Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (as per penciled note on verso), purportedly taken at Hampton University in 1935 based on information provided by the consignor. A modern note indicates that the the photograph was obtained from a family in Newport News connected to Hampton University. -- 5 5/8 x 3 7/8 in. uncredited photograph on cardstock mount featuring a studio portrait of a man pushing a young girl seated in a fancy carriage adorned with flowers (some fading and toning to print). It is difficult to discern the race of the young man.

Together, 8 photographs, condition fair to very good. Some with light soiling and corner and edge wear to mounts.
