[ENSLAVEMENT & ABOLITION]. Manuscript petition concerning the estate of James Ricks, which includes property and enslaved persons. Calhoun County, AR, February 1860.
2pp, 8 x 13 in., bifolium. Creased along old folds, toning along creases and edges, minor wear to edges and corners). Docketing to terminal leaf.
Concerns enslaved persons, cotton bales, and the farm of descendant. States that "it would be the best interest of estate to keep the slaves and property together." And that "there was about three bales of cotton made on the place last year." A statement on the second page provides the sworn opinion of J. B. McCulloch and J. R. Caulder, whose relation to the estate is unknown, that "the interest of the Estate...would be promoted by...working the slaves."
