Page 171 of the issue contains bold headlines, "Important Proclamation by the President / The Slaves of Rebels Proclaimed Free / By the President of the United States…” followed by a complete printing of Abraham Lincoln’s preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
The issue also contains an inside page headline, “General Mitchel and His Negro Spy,” with a report on Sam Gardiner, an enslaved African American who was a spy for the Union during the Civil War (page 166).
