Secretary Albright saw art and cultural diplomacy as important tools of foreign policy, which she often utilized as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and as the Secretary of State: “Cultural diplomacy is a very important part of the toolbox. Of trying to show who we are by the kind of art that we create and are able to inspire people with, and at the same time learn an awful lot about other people’s cultures by the art that they have” (ArtSpeak, Democratic National Convention, 4 September 2012).

Provenance for the lot: Secretary Madeleine K. Albright (inscriptions, bookplates).
