8vo. 4pp. publisher's advertisements dated March 1851 [BAL's printing A, no priority]. (Some browning and spotting throughout.) Original brown blind-embossed cloth [BAL binding A] (spine leaning, minor separation to the upper joint, some soiling). Provenance: "McKean" (contemporary ownership inscription).
FIRST EDITION of Hawthorne's Gothic novel, inspired by the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion in Salem, Massachusetts, which belonged to Hawthorne's cousin Susanna Ingersoll, and by Hawthorne's ancestors who were involved with the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. BAL 7604.
