Small 8vo. Half-title; 1p. publisher's advertisement at end. Original salmon cloth stamped and lettered in black (spine a bit sunned, light rubbing to extremities, some cockling to covers); folding cloth chemise and slipcase.
FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, cloth issue, also printed simultaneously in wrappers. "Published as a 'shilling shocker,' a form at that time in fashion, it became instantly popular; was quoted from a thousand pulpits; was translated into German, French and Danish; and the names of its two chief characters have passed into the common stock of proverbial allusion" (DNB).
