This was the first convention held since 1942, as the annual events had been put on hiatus due to the Second World War. This year was also the first for which the Retro Hugo Awards, established in 1996 at the third Los Angeles WorldCon for works that would have been Hugo-eligible fifty years prior, were awarded.
