Lot Description
[FLAGS]. A group of 2 American flags, incl. 45-star and 48-star examples. Late 19th-early 20th century.

60 x 111 in. machine-sewn wool flag with 45 double-appliquéd cotton stars configured in 7/8/7/8/7/8 pattern (toning, some areas of separation and small holes scattered throughout, occasional soiling). Hoist is canvas, with notations on reverse side, including inked inscription, "3yd Ensign. Johnson Bros. Bath. Me." Ca 1896-1908. Utah was the 45th state added to the Union in January 1896, with the flag becoming official on 4 July of that year. It served as the official flag for 12 years.

[With:] 42 1/2 x 69 in. machine-sewn cotton flag with 48 double-appliquéd cotton stars, which appear to be hand-sewn, configured in 8/8/8/8/8/8 pattern (some light fading to blue canton, occasional soiling, otherwise very good). Hoist is cotton with jute rope attached. White stripe below canton with hand-stitched identification, "George Morgan Ross / September 1 1914 / Butler Pa."
