Lot Description
[WORLD WAR II] -- JAPANESE INTERNMENT]. Instructions to All Persons of Japanese Ancestry... [Western Defense Command]: [San Francisco], [1942].
14 X 22 in. poster (few minor spots/stains, minor wear to edges/corners). Signed in print by "J. L. DeWitt, Lieutenant General, U. S. Army Commanding." Lower left reads, "See Civilian Exclusion Order No. 7."
This poster was issued, originally together with a "notice" from the Fourth Army (not included here), with different versions for each of the 110 zones established by the US Army. The one featured here was intended for those living in a certain section of Los Angeles County.
In part: "...all persons of Japanese ancestry, both alien and non-alien will be evacuated from the above area by 12 o'clock noon, P. W. T., Tuesday, April 28, 1942. No Japanese person living in the above area will be permitted to change residence after 12 o'clock noon, P. W. T., Monday, April 20, 1942, without obtaining special permission..."
Evacuees were instructed to bring with them bedding and linens (no mattresses), toilet articles, extra clothing, sufficient cutlery and dishes, and essential personal effects for each member of the family.
