Lot Description
[SPORTS]. Hall Co., photographers. Half plate tintype proof of Chicago White Stockings pitcher, "Jocko" Flynn. Goodwin & Co., ca 1888.
5 x 7 in. plate (somewhat faded, spotting, texturing to emulsion). Featuring a portrait of John A. "Jocko" Flynn posed holding a bat and wearing an "Omaha" uniform. "Copyright 1888 Goodwin & Co." written in the negative, along with a very faint identification, "Flynn. P."
With original paper envelope stamped for Hall Co., NY and bearing ink inscription, "Flynn P. / OMAHA / proof."
The image featured here was used on Old Judge cigarette cards along with 2-3 other poses showing Flynn as a member of the Omaha team of the Western Association.
Flynn holds the record for the most major league wins (23) by a pitcher who played only a single season, which he achieved in 1886 with the Chicago White Stockings. He missed the World Series that year due to issues with his arm.
A rare image.
