Lot Description
TAYLOR, ZACHARY (1784-1850). Unissued ship's pass document signed ("Z Taylor") as President. N.p., n.d.
One page, 14 x 14 1/4 in., on vellum. Creased at folds, some clipping and wear to edges. Embossed white seal affixed to lower left. Countersigned by Secretary of State John M. Clayton (1796-1856).
This unissued ship's passport was likely signed in advance of being sent out to an American port where it could be filled out and issued accordingly by a Collector of Customs. The top of the document is scalloped, the upper portion having been clipped and sent to United States consuls to be matched up with this bottom portion, which would have been held by the ship.
