Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. [SHINDLER, Antonio Zeno (1823-1899), photographer]. Photograph of Iowa chiefs, agents, and interpreters. [Washington, DC, 1869].

5 3/4 x 7 1/2 in. albumen photograph on 10 3/4 x 13 7/8 in. cardstock mount (light toning to print; toning, some soiling, edge/corner wear to mount).

The Iowa delegation was in Washington, DC, from at least February 2 to 13, 1869, but likely longer. The delegation signed a treaty on February 11, which was not ratified. This portrait was taken during their time in the city, and includes the following subjects: front row (left to right), Knife, Briar, unidentified Caucasian man, British, and Deer Ham; back row (left to right), Elisha Doreau, Little Chief, Black Hawk, and two unidentified Caucasian men. Indian agents and interpreters H.R. Clum, D.R. Holt, C.H. McKnight, and C.H. Norris witnessed the treaty, and it is believed that likely three of these men are included in the group portrait. See Plate 200 in Paula Richardson Fleming's Native American Photography at the Smithsonian: The Shindler Catalogue (Smithsonian Institution, 2003).
