Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. MUYBRIDGE, Eadweard (1830-1904), photographer. Albert Bierstadt's Studio. San Francisco, CA: Bradley & Rulofson, ca 1870s..
Cabinet-sized stereoview on yellow mount (very minor toning to print; mount with light soiling and wear to edges and corners). "The Indians of California" series imprint and incorrect image caption, "1584—A Group of Mariposa Belles" on mount recto. Verso bears imprint for Muybridge's "Photographic Illustrations of the Pacific Coast" along with correct image caption inscribed in modern ink.
Here, Muybridge captures Albert Bierstadt painting a Native American man sitting in front of a built structure while others watch the artist at work. This view was apparently used as a study for a painting illustrated in Gordon Hendricks' Albert Bierstadt: Painter of the American West (Harry N. Abrams, New York: 1974): Page 325 - “California - Indian Camp: Scene near Mariposa,” 1871-1873, oil on canvas.
