A group of 32 CDVs, including the following subjects, many of which served in the Department of the Gulf: General Edwin Griffin Beckwith, commanded the defenses of New Orleans, 1863-1864. Washington, DC: Julius Ulke, printed 1876, from image originally produced ca 1863 (residue and wear on mount verso). -- CDV of Edwin Griffin Beckwith's wife Cornelia as identified by photocopy of original album page in which the carte was housed. New Orleans, LA: New Orleans Photographic Co. (spotting, print/mount trimmed). -- William Buel Franklin. New Orleans, LA: Theo. Lilienthal, 1863 (soiling, mount trimmed). -- CDV of Colonel Charles B. Chittenden as identified by photocopy of original album page in which the carte was housed. Chittenden served with the 128th New York Infantry and US Volunteers Quartermasters Department. Uncredited (toning, spotting, print/mount trimmed). Chittenden died in New Orleans in 1867. -- CDV of Colonel Chittenden's wife as identified by photocopy of original album page in which the carte was housed. Hudson, NY: F. Forshew (print/mount trimmed). -- General Samuel B. Holabird as identified by photocopy of original album page in which the carte was housed. Holabird was chief quartermaster of the Department of the Gulf, 1862-1865, and participated in the Siege of Port Hudson. The following Naval subjects are also included: Lieutenant Joseph B. Smith, acting commander of the frigate Congress on 8 March 1862 when she was attacked and destroyed by the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia. Smith was KIA aboard the Congress. Boston, MA: Black (toning, soiling). -- Rear Admiral William Shubrick (2). First, New York, NY: Brady (soiling, print/mount trimmed, residue and wear on mount verso). Second, uncredited view of Shubrick standing in civilian clothing (toning, paper residue on mount verso). – Captain Samuel Franklin, as identified on mount verso, participated in the Battle of Hampton Roads in 1862, later served as Fleet Captain with naval forces on the Mississippi River in the vicinity of New Orleans. Provenance: Acquired from the great grandson of Union General Edward Griffin Beckwith (1818-1881) (consignor relates). Beckwith commanded the defenses of New Orleans from August 1863 - January 1864, after the fall of New Orleans in 1862.
