[CIVIL WAR-SPAN. AM. WAR]. 4 items, incl. photograph of Gen. Joseph Wheeler by F.B. Johnston.

JOHNSTON, Francis Benjamin (1864-1952), photographer. Large format photograph of Joseph Wheeler, ex Confederate General, wearing a Union Brigadier General's uniform at the time when he joined the US Army during the Spanish American War and ventured to Cuba. 7 3/4 x 5 1/2 in., on 12 1/2 x 10 in. cardstock mount (slight surface abrasion near right edge of print, otherwise very good, mount corners trimmed). The mount is signed in pencil along the lower right margin, "Fr. Benj. Johnston." 

Johnston worked for five presidents as an official photographer. She is noted for her photographs of the Hampton Institute of Southern Architecture as well as society and portraits of important political figures. Most of her photographs are held by the Library of Congress. She is an important American photographer.

[With:] HARDIE, James Allen. Mexican War and Civil War officer. Clipped signature ("Jas. A. Hardie, AAG"), approx. 7/8 x 2 in., mounted on card.

[With:] Cabinet card of William Henry Jordan, US Army. Chicago, IL: Mosher, n.d. (rich tonality, mount trimmed). Civil War and Indian War veteran who ended up stationed on the west coast (Oregon). 

[Also with:] MOTT, T. Bentley (1865-1952). Autographed cabinet photograph of the American military officer. Paris: Eug. Pirou, n.d. (toning, otherwise very good, some residue on mount verso). Inscription signed by Mott in lower margin of print. Mott served as a liaison officer between General "Black Jack" Pershing and French Marshal Ferdinand Foch during World War I. He is shown wearing the Order of the French Legion of Honor on his neck. He received other orders and medals as well.
