Lot includes, in part, papers associated with James Tupper (1819-1868), Charleston Master-in-Equity, and with the Cohen family, Charleston commission merchants. Documents vary in nature, and relate to subpoenas, wills, indentures, bonds, briefs, orders and other legal matters.

A native of Charleston, South Carolina, James Tupper practiced law and preached in Aiken, S.C. He was appointed Master-in-Equity in 1850, and served during the Civil War as South Carolina state auditor. Tupper was involved in the sale of property which did at times include enslaved men and women. Additional research into the papers offered here may yield important connections to the South Carolina slave trade.
