Lot Description
[BRADY, Mathew (ca. 1822-1896)]. Advertisement for Brady's National Gallery of Daguerreotypes.
3 1/4 x 8 in. advertisement (toning, creasing, tears, small losses) for "Brady's National Gallery of Daguerreotypes" appearing in the International Illuminated Advertiser. New York: Baker, Godwin, & Co., Printers, ca early 1850s.
Brady was well aware of the marketing value of the honors and awards which he had received for his work, and frequently touted his accomplishments in his advertising. The advertisement offered here heralds portraits taken for "The Gallery of Illustrious Americans," "His Colored Daguerreotypes on Ivory," "The First Gold Medal Ever awarded for Daguerreotypes," and "The Premium at the World's Fair." Brady's studio was located at 205-207 Broadway (at Fulton Street) from 1844 until 1858, indicating that the address identified on this advertisement "203 & 205 Broadway" is likely a typo.
[With:] Hayden, E.S. Splendid Daguerreotype Miniatures, Taken in Every Style. Waterbury, CT: American Office Print, n.d. 10 x 12 in. printed broadside (toning, spotting).
An advertisement for daguerreotypist E.S. Hayden who "is now prepared to take LIKENESSES of all who may favor him with a call." Note that the address and the town were left blank, indicating an itinerant daguerreotypist.
