Lot Description
GREELEY, Horace (1811-1872). A group of 2 AlsS, comprising:
Washington, DC, 5 March 1861. To A. S. Hill, Esq., of Worcester, MA. 1 1/2 pages, 5 x 8 in. (creasing, edgewear, minor discoloration in spots). On Office of the Tribune letterhead with manuscript edits. Greeley writes, in part, about requesting appointments from the President (Lincoln): "There are two excellent reasons for not appointing a person to office, namely: 1. Because he has been connected with The Tribune. 2. Because he can't live without an office. I am not able to avoid the asking of certain appointments from the President, but the necessity is a terrible one....There is a [indecipherable] rush to make the Federal Treasury a hospital, and it must be resisted...."
New York, NY, 16 January 1870. To O. O. Case, Esq., of Hartford, CT. 1 1/2 pages, 5 x 8 in. (creasing, soiling, wear to edges/corners). On New-York Tribune letterhead. In part: "I do not think we have done badly in 1869, all things considered; yet it seems to one that you [indecipherable] find a German publisher who would by the German edition and, by [indecipherable] effect, work it off. I would like to have the work substantially out or [indecipherable] before we attempt to continue and perfect it. The German edition is our chief deed..."
Together, 2 ALsS.
[With:] Greeley clipped signature previously mounted below an engraved portrait of Greeley (now loose, dampstaining and toning to edges of engraving).
